Curly Hair Routine: Define and Hydrate Your Curls

My curly hair has a mind of its own. Some days it looks great all defined and soft. Days it feels dry and frizzy. This is just how curly hair is, because of the way it is made and how it reacts to the weather and the products I use.

The truth is, curly hair does not need a lot of steps to look good. It just needs to be treated and it needs to be hydrated. Once I figured out what my curly hair needs it became a lot easier to take care of it and make it look its best.

Understanding Curly Hair

Curly hair is different from hair. Each strand of hair bends and twists which makes it hard for the natural oils from my scalp to get all the way down to the end of my hair. That is why my curls often feel dry.

At the root of every strand of hair is the hair follicle, which helps my hair grow and makes it strong.. The way my curls look depends on how well I take care of them and how gently I treat them.

When my curls do not have moisture they lose their shape and get frizzy. When they have moisture they look great all bouncy and soft.

Step 1: Use a Gentle Shampoo

I should not wash my hair with harsh shampoos. Those kinds of shampoos strip away the oils and leave my curls feeling dry and rough.

Instead I use a shampoo that cleans my scalp without drying out the rest of my hair. I focus on washing my scalp. Then I let the shampoo rinse through the rest of my hair.

I usually only need to wash my hair two or three times a week. If I wash it much my curls start to lose their natural bounce.

Step 2: Deep Conditioning is Important

Using conditioner is one of the important parts of my curly hair routine. It helps put moisture into my hair and makes it easier to comb out.

After I wash my hair I put conditioner over it from the middle to the ends. I use my fingers or a wide-tooth comb to get out any tangles while the conditioner is still in my hair.

A week I use a deep conditioning mask. This helps fix any dryness and keeps my curls soft and hydrated.

Step 3: Do Not Forget Leave-In Conditioner

Leave-in conditioner is like a protection for my curly hair. It helps keep my curls moisturized after I wash them. Keeps them looking great all day.

I put leave-in conditioner on my hair when it is still damp focusing on the middle and ends. I try not to put much near my scalp because that can make my hair feel greasy.

This step helps reduce frizz and makes my curls look more defined. It also makes it easier to style my hair.

Step 4: Define Curls When Hair is Damp

The time to make my curls look great is when my hair is still wet or damp. That is when my curls are most flexible and easiest to shape.

I can use techniques like scrunching my hair up with my hands or twisting individual curls to make them look more defined.

I try not to brush my hair when it’s dry because that can break my curls and make them frizzy.

My goal is to make my curls look their best not to change the way they naturally’re

Step 5: Dry Hair the Right Way

How I dry my hair makes a difference. If I rub my hair with a towel that can mess up my curls. Make them frizzy.

Instead I use a towel or a cotton T-shirt to gently squeeze out extra water.

If I need to use a blow dryer I always use a diffuser and low heat. That helps keep my curls looking great and prevents damage from the heat.

Sometimes I just let my hair air dry, which is also a way to keep my curls looking their best.

Step 6: Use Lightweight Products

My curly hair likes products, like curl creams or gels. Those kinds of products help keep my curls looking great and make them feel soft and flexible.

I put an amount of product on my hair when it is still damp and make sure to spread it evenly. I do not want to use much product because that can make my hair feel stiff or heavy.

The right product should make my curls look great not weigh them down.

Step 7: Protect Curls at Night

What I do at night can make a difference in how my curls look in the morning. If I sleep on a pillow that’s rough that can cause frizz and flatten my curls.

To protect my curls I sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase. I wear a soft hair bonnet. Those things help keep my curls looking great even while I am sleeping.

Step 8: Do Not Overwash or Overstyle

I do not need to wash my hair every day. If I do that can dry out my curls. Make them brittle.

I also try not to style my hair much because that can weigh it down or cause buildup. Instead I keep things and let my natural texture shine.

If I need to refresh my curls between washes I just use a bit of water or a leave-in spray.

Step 9: Take Care of My Scalp

My scalp is important because it affects how healthy my hair is. If my scalp is dry or irritated that can affect how my curls look.

To keep my scalp healthy I make sure to keep it clean and balanced. I also give myself scalp massages, which helps improve blood flow and keeps my hair healthy.

When my scalp is healthy my curls look their best.

Step 10: Trim My Hair Regularly

If I do not trim my hair regularly it can start to look uneven and frizzy. That is because split ends can travel up the hair shaft and cause damage.

To keep my curls looking their best I get my hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks. That helps get rid of split ends and keeps my hair looking healthy and full.

There are some mistakes that can ruin curly hair:
